The BIg Field : a Child's Year Under the Southern Cross
The Big Field is a lovely picture book for all children and an important addition to resources for the Early Years curriculum. Patterned after books of hours, it is a month-by-month account of life on a farm at the edge of the Atlantic Rainforest in South America. Birds, flowers, butterflies, and bugs abound in a warm and gentle story of three young children living on their grandmother’s farm and learning from her the seasonal changes and simple activities that often mirror those of children in the northern hemisphere. The subtext of the grandmother’s determination to reforest the big field of the title gives hope and a way forward to young children as they learn about nature in the modern world.
No other book exists to introduce young children to the seasons and nature in this part of the southern hemisphere, and precious few are available to teachers to use in the classroom. Also available are a detailed Teachers’ Guide (in hard copy or on a CD) and two classroom posters.
The Big Field is also available in Portuguese, as O Grande Campo:
In French, as Le Grand Pré:

Polly Blue
Polly Blue tells the story of a small blue butterfly, innocent and free, who suffers a great trauma from the sky. She becomes paralyzed by her fear, to the point that she can no longer fly, for the sky is too frightening. So, she walks, trudges, and lives a life of despair and fear. Eventually, she meets someone whose simple wisdom and hope free her from her terror.
Polly Blue is a hand made book. The book is hand bound, in the Japanese style, with green ribbon of pure silk. This is a first edition, limited to 250 copies, each numbered and signed on the last page.
